Nutrition Therapy in Obesity
Obesity is a chronic disease that requires long-term, individualized, and interdisciplinary treatment. It cannot be cured, but it can be treated effectively. Nutrition therapy is based on current scientific evidence as well as established clinical practice.
Dietitians support people with overweight and obesity in a holistic, respectful, and empathetic way. We consider the complex biopsychosocial nature of the disease, promote self-care, and actively work to reduce stigma. The health and well-being of individuals are at the center of our work.
Role of Nutrition Therapy
Nutrition therapy supports people over the long term in making changes to eating and health behaviors. The aim is to help develop habits that sustainably improve health, functional ability, and quality of life. In this process, we strengthen nutrition competence, support the development of helpful daily routines, and help individuals recognize and use their personal resources.
Treatment outcomes are not assessed primarily by body weight, but by multidimensional outcomes such as quality of life, physical and mental health, functional ability in daily life, and a health-promoting relationship with food.
Interprofessional Care
Nutrition therapy is a key component of interprofessional obesity treatment. It can take place in different therapeutic contexts—both without and in combination with pharmacological or surgical treatments.
Our work is based on a respectful, evidence-based, and best-practice approach. It includes behavioral methods as well as nutritional physiology and nutrition psychology interventions, and it takes place in close collaboration with other health professionals.
Through continuous professional education and training, we ensure that our approaches remain up to date and can be adapted to individual needs. The goal is to support sustainable change processes and measurable improvements in health and quality of life—beyond changes in body weight.
Vision
We advocate for obesity to be recognized in society as a disease that can be treated. All people affected should have access to quality-assured, interprofessional treatment options.
